Stone Sealer
Sealer is easily applied, but there are two distinct varieties to choose from. The heavy industrial variety is a plastic or epoxy based sealant. The other is a water-based sealant that uses mostly silicone particles to heal seal the stone. Each has its pro’s and con’s, but the general rule is that the epoxy variety is much more durable and long lasting. However, it has some drawbacks. For starters, these products are much more expensive. Additionally, they require a lengthy drying period to be completely sealed, a real problem if you are working during many parts of the year. Finally, they are harmful to the environment. Generally speaking, these products are great for heavily trafficked areas, not near natural features. Water-based models on the other hand are easily to apply, cheaper, and are less harmful to the environment. Overall, select between these two choices based on the amount of traffic and the severity of exposure to water and other abrasive elements such as car tires.
